Short answer: "Cloud" or "boneless" describes how a sofa is built and feels — no rigid frame, deep, plush foam seats you sink into — while "sofa in a box" describes how it is delivered: compressed or flat-packed into boxes that fit through narrow doors, stairs and elevators. For a small apartment the best choice is often both: a cloud-style sofa that arrives in a box, sized as a 2-seater or a modular layout you can rearrange.

A full sofa… that arrives in a box. Below we compare the two ideas side by side, show which of our sofas fit which room, and list what to measure before you order.

Which fits a small apartment?

  • Tight stairwell or small elevator: choose a compressed sofa in a box. The Cloud Modular PackSavvy arrives in a compact 0.4 m³ box.
  • Small living room: choose a 2-seater (the Cloud Modular comes in 78") or a modular piece you can rearrange to suit the room.
  • Room you might rearrange or move: choose a reversible chaise or a movable ottoman so the L can flip sides.
  • Lots of lounging: deep seats feel best, but leave about 30" of walkway in front of the sofa when you plan the room.

Renting? No more sofa-vs-stairwell battles. See our guide to sofas for narrow stairs and small doorways.

What to measure before you order

  1. Your doorway width and height, and any tight corners on the stairs.
  2. The elevator door and cabin depth if you live in a building.
  3. The wall where the sofa will go, and the room depth: sofa depth plus about 30" of walkway.
  4. For an L-shape, which side the chaise should sit on (reversible chaises and movable ottomans can switch).
  5. The box sizes on the product page, against steps 1–2.

Cloud comfort, without the delivery headache

If you want the deep, sink-in feel and live up a walk-up, a compressed Cloud sofa gives you both: it fits through narrow doorways, needs no tools, and you can rearrange the modules when you move. Frequently asked questions

Is a cloud couch good for a small apartment?

It can be, if you pick the size and seat depth to fit. Cloud-style seats are deep (about 22–30 inches on our range), so they take more floor depth than a slim sofa; in a small room choose a 2-seater or a modular piece you can rearrange, and check the delivery boxes against your doorway, stairs and elevator before you order.

Is every sofa in a box a cloud couch?

No. "Sofa in a box" only describes delivery: the sofa arrives compressed or flat-packed in boxes. "Cloud" or "boneless" describes the build and feel: no rigid frame, deep, plush foam seats. Many cloud sofas ship in a box, but a boxed sofa can also be a firm, framed design.

Do compressed sofas get back to full shape?

Yes, they are designed to. Unbox, remove the packaging and the foam expands; our Cloud L-shape beige can take up to about 72 hours to reach full loft. Fluffing and rotating cushions regularly keeps the cloud-like shape.

Which cloud sofa ships fastest in the US?

Our US-stock Cloud sofas — the Cloud L-shape beige, the Cloud L-shape olive with ottoman and the Cloud Deep-Seat — ship free from our US warehouse, usually the next business day, and arrive in 2–7 business days (US addresses only).

Can I get a cloud sofa delivered outside the US?

Yes. The Cloud Modular PackSavvy and the Aria PackSavvy are part of our sofa-in-a-box range, with free worldwide delivery in under 2 weeks. We handle taxes and import duties for most countries — the price you pay is the final price.
