A recliner with lumbar support is a reclining chair or sofa whose backrest is shaped, padded or adjustable to fill the inward curve of your lower back (the lumbar spine), so there is no gap to slump into as you lean back. It can be built-in padding, an adjustable (sometimes power) lumbar section, or movable pieces such as tilting armrests or cushions you position yourself.

Why the lower-back curve matters
Your spine has natural curves, and the lumbar curve sits just above your hips. Harvard Health advises sitting well back in your seat, feet flat, and being aware of the curve in your lower back — even using a rolled towel to help maintain it (Harvard Health: Posture and back health). Lumbar support in a recliner does the same job as that towel, built into the seat. Mayo Clinic's ergonomics guidance likewise recommends a seat that supports your spine with your feet flat on the floor (Mayo Clinic: Office ergonomics).
Reclining itself may also help: a small 2006 positional-MRI study (22 healthy volunteers) presented at the Radiological Society of North America found leaning back at 135° put less strain on spinal discs than sitting upright at 90° (Medical News Today summary).
Types of lumbar support in recliners
| Type | How it works | Good for |
| Built-in (fixed) padding | Backrest foam is shaped to the lower-back curve | People whose back fits the shape; simplest |
| Power lumbar | A motorised section pushes in or out at a button press | Fine-tuning; households where several people sit |
| Movable supports | Tilting armrests, bolsters or cushions you position | Changing positions (reading, lounging); modular sofas |
Is it a game-changer or a gimmick?
Neither label fits everyone. Lumbar support may help if you tend to slump, spend long evenings on the sofa, or find standard sofas leave a gap behind your lower back. It won't replace movement: Harvard Health recommends getting up at least every 30 minutes (Harvard Health), and the NHS says staying active helps back pain get better (NHS: Back pain). The best test is simple: sit all the way back — the support should meet your lower back without pushing you forward.
What to check before buying
- Height of the support: it should sit in the small of your back, not your mid-back.
- Recline range: ideally reaching roughly 135°.
- Seat depth: shallow enough that your back reaches the backrest with feet flat.
- Cushion firmness: firm enough that you don't sink past the support.

Frequently asked questions
What is a recliner with lumbar support?
It is a recliner whose backrest is shaped, padded or adjustable to fill the curve of your lower back, so you stay supported rather than slumping as you lean back.
Does lumbar support in a recliner help back pain?
It may help reduce pressure on your lower back while sitting by supporting its natural curve, as Harvard Health recommends. It is not a treatment — see a doctor if pain lasts more than a few weeks.
What is the difference between power and manual lumbar support?
Power lumbar uses a motor to move a section of the backrest in or out at a button press; manual or fixed support relies on the backrest shape or cushions you position yourself.
Can I add lumbar support to a sofa I already own?
A small cushion or rolled towel in the small of your back can help maintain the lumbar curve, as Harvard Health suggests.
Which Couchery recliner has extra lumbar support?
The Cascade's adjustable armrests tilt to act as backrests or pillows, giving added lumbar support in different positions.
