Short answer: yes — a well-designed reclining sofa can be good for your back, because leaning back to around 135° with your lower back supported can reduce pressure on the spine compared with sitting bolt upright. What matters is the fit: lumbar support where your lower back curves, a seat you can sit all the way back in with your feet flat, and getting up to move regularly — no sofa replaces that.

What the research says about reclining and your back
In a positional-MRI study presented at the Radiological Society of North America in 2006, researchers at the University of Alberta Hospital compared slouching, sitting upright at 90° and leaning back at 135° in 22 healthy volunteers. The reclined 135° position showed the least disc movement and strain; upright 90° showed the most (summary via Medical News Today). It was a small study in people without back pain, so treat it as a useful pointer rather than proof — but it is why a recliner's angle range is worth checking.
Mainstream medical guidance adds three points that apply to any seat:
- Support the natural curve of your lower back. Harvard Health advises sitting as far back in the seat as possible, feet flat, and being aware of the curve in your lower back — even using a rolled towel to maintain it (Harvard Health: Posture and back health).
- Feet flat on the floor. Mayo Clinic's ergonomics guidance: choose a seat that supports your spine and lets your feet rest flat on the floor (Mayo Clinic: Office ergonomics).
- Don't stay put. Harvard Health recommends getting up at least every 30 minutes (Harvard Health: Don't take back pain sitting down), Cleveland Clinic suggests a short walk about once an hour (Cleveland Clinic: Poor posture), and the NHS says staying active and continuing daily activities helps back pain get better (NHS: Back pain).
When a recliner helps — and when it doesn't
A recliner may help when it lets you lean back with your lower back supported, spreads your weight across the backrest instead of the base of your spine, and lets you change position easily (a power recliner makes small adjustments effortless). It won't help if the seat is so deep you slump to reach the backrest, if the lumbar area leaves a gap, or if it becomes a reason to sit still for hours.
Upright sofa vs recliner: quick comparison
| What to check | Standard upright sofa | Power recliner sofa |
| Back angle | Fixed, often near upright | Adjustable — look for a range that reaches ~135° or more |
| Lower-back support | Depends on cushions; often a gap | Backrest follows you as you recline; add a cushion if there's a gap |
| Leg support | None (feet on floor or ottoman) | Built-in footrest raises legs |
| Changing position | Shuffle and re-pile cushions | Press a button, fine-tune any time |
| Space needed | Sofa footprint only | Wall-hugging designs need little or no gap behind |
The 5 specs to check before you buy
- Recline range. Can it reach roughly 135°? Multi-position or stepless power recline is easiest to fine-tune.
- Lumbar fit. Sit all the way back: the backrest should meet the curve of your lower back without a gap.
- Seat depth and height. Your feet should rest flat on the floor while your back touches the backrest.
- Cushion firmness. Supportive, high-density foam holds its shape better than very soft fill that lets you sink.
- Wall clearance. Wall-hugging mechanisms let you recline in smaller rooms without pulling the sofa out.

Frequently asked questions
Are reclining sofas good for your back?
They can be. Leaning back to around 135° with your lower back supported may reduce pressure on the spine compared with sitting upright at 90°, based on a small 2006 MRI study. Choose one whose backrest meets your lower-back curve and keep getting up to move.
What is the best recline angle for your back?
Around 135° is the angle most often cited, from a 2006 positional-MRI study of 22 volunteers that found it caused the least disc strain of the positions tested. A power recliner lets you find what feels comfortable for you around that point.
What if my back still hurts after changing my sofa?
The NHS advises seeing a GP if back pain does not improve after a few weeks of home treatment or stops you doing day-to-day activities. A better sofa can reduce pressure while you sit, but it is not a treatment.
Power or manual recliner for back pain?
A power recliner lets you make small angle changes without pushing or pulling a lever, which makes it easier to shift positions often, in line with medical advice to change position and move regularly.
Do Couchery recliners need space behind them?
The Cascade and Serenity use a wall-hugging design that needs no clearance behind to recline, so they suit smaller living rooms.
Can I choose the fabric or leather?
Yes. Signature recliners are made to order in your choice of fabric or leather, including pet-friendly, scratch-resistant performance fabrics, and you choose the size and how many seats recline.
