The designer’s starting point

How to make a recliner
look like it belongs.

To make a reclining sofa look good, start with one that reads as a normal sofa when upright: a concealed mechanism, slim or square arms and visible legs. Put it against the longest wall, anchor it with a rug big enough for the footrest, keep tables light and movable, and put one lamp beside the seat you recline in.

“Do attractive reclining sofas exist?” A Reddit interiors thread asking exactly that drew more than 100 replies. “How do you even decorate around a reclining sofa?” asked another person, who had finally bought one for back pain. Recliners are having a moment (one UK retailer reported searches for “recliner” up 198% in a year), but the reputation for bulk has not gone away.

For this issue we ranked the questions people actually ask, using search data, Google’s most-asked questions, Reddit and Houzz threads, interiors editors and NHS seating guidance. Then we placed two Signature recliners, Serenity and Cascade, into four real interiors to show the answers.

The goal: a seat that supports a long evening, in a room nobody would guess holds a recliner.

Design studies: Couchery sofas have been edited into real interior photographs. These images illustrate styling ideas, rather than photographed installations or customer endorsements. Colours, proportions and textures are visual references; confirm your model, layout and physical upholstery sample before ordering. This article offers general comfort and styling information, not medical advice.

Four ways to make it yours

01 / Small-space calm

Fit a recliner into a small flat.

A compact flat, a curved shelf niche and one soft green sofa.

Palette / Sage · Warm white · Blush rug · Light oak

Small rooms punish bulky furniture. A classic recliner needs space behind it and looks heavy from every angle, so it usually ends up pushed into a corner. In a compact flat like this one, the sofa has to work as the main seat for guests and as the place you put your feet up.

A sage-green Serenity sits against the wall beneath the shelf niche and reads as a tailored three-seater. Its reclining seats are concealed, and the wall-hugging mechanism means no space is needed behind it, so the only clearance you plan for is the walking route in front.

How to bring the pieces together

  • Use light, open side tables (glass, metal or rattan) that slide aside when a footrest goes up.
  • Keep the rug large enough that the reclined footrest still sits on it.
  • Put the wall light or lamp above the reclining end, so the best seat for resting is also the best-lit one.

Who it suits. City dwellers who need one sofa to be both the smart seat for guests and the place to lie back after a long day.

The edit to avoid. Pushing a heavy coffee table right up to the sofa. A raised footrest needs that space, and so do your knees when you stand up.

02 / Quiet luxury

Make comfort look expensive.

Plaster walls, sheer linen and a soft ivory two-seater.

Palette / Ivory · Plaster beige · Brass · Bottle green

Quiet-luxury rooms rely on texture rather than colour: a limewashed plaster wall, floor-length sheers, a brass chest and one sculptural glass table. Anything that looks mechanical breaks the spell, which is exactly why most recliners never make it into rooms like this.

Here a two-seat Serenity in ivory bouclé takes the place of a statement sofa. Upright it is soft and calm; reclined, one seat becomes a proper reading position with the legs supported, without the room ever looking like a media room.

How to bring the pieces together

  • Let one material do the talking: bouclé against plaster is enough texture for the whole room.
  • Choose one sculptural piece (glass, stone or brass) rather than several decorative objects.
  • Keep throws and cushions in the same ivory family so a reclined seat still looks tidy.

Who it suits. People who want a calm, design-led room and a seat that supports long evenings of reading.

The edit to avoid. Adding a bulky footstool. The reclining seat already supports your legs, so keep the floor clear and light.

03 / Moody panelled room

Give a dark room a warm anchor.

Dark teal panelling, a crystal chandelier and warm cognac leather.

Palette / Deep teal · Cognac · Brass · Smoked glass

Dark, panelled rooms are back: deep teal or green walls, a statement light and a rug in the same family. They feel cocooning in the evening, but they need one warm, solid piece to stop the colour swallowing the room.

Cognac leather does that job. Cascade's slim padded arms and tapered black legs keep it looking like a mid-century sofa, so it sits comfortably beneath period panelling, and one seat reclines for reading by the window.

How to bring the pieces together

  • Repeat the leather's warmth once or twice (brass side tables, a wooden floor) rather than adding more colours.
  • Keep the coffee table round and light so it is easy to move around a raised footrest.
  • Add one patterned cushion in black and cream to connect the sofa with the room's details.

Who it suits. Readers and film lovers who want a deep-coloured, cocooning room and a seat that supports long sessions.

The edit to avoid. Choosing a dark leather in a dark room. A lighter cognac or caramel keeps the sofa visible and inviting.

04 / Warm minimal

Let one warm colour do the work.

White walls, one bold artwork and a copper two-seater for family time.

Palette / Copper · White · Black ink · Natural fibres

A simple white wall, one graphic artwork and a natural-fibre carpet make a calm backdrop for a single confident colour. Copper velour suede is warm in daylight, glows under lamps and hides everyday wear better than pale fabrics.

A two-seat Cascade fits under the artwork with room to spare; made to order, it can be sized to your wall. With one seat reclined, a parent can put their feet up while a child sits upright alongside: the sofa adapts without rearranging the room.

How to bring the pieces together

  • Balance a strong sofa colour with white walls and black-and-white art.
  • Use a knitted throw and two pale cushions to soften the colour and protect the seat.
  • Compare the upholstery sample in daylight and evening light; copper tones shift noticeably.

Who it suits. Households that want one colourful, sociable sofa that can still become a place to stretch out.

The edit to avoid. Matching the sofa, cushions and curtains in the same copper. One strong colour field is enough.

What people actually ask

Six questions,
ranked by how often they come up.

01

“Do attractive reclining sofas exist?”

The most common complaint we found. A Reddit r/interiordecorating thread with 100+ comments asked exactly this; the top reply was blunt: “They’re all hideous.” Livingetc calls the classic recliner an “archaic eyesore”. The fix is in the frame: concealed mechanisms, slim or square arms and visible legs, as in all four rooms above.

02

“How do you even decorate around a reclining sofa?”

Asked on r/HomeDecorating by someone who “finally caved” because of back pain. The top answer: round side tables, brass lamps and green plants. That is close to what designers do here: light, movable tables, one lamp by the reclining seat, and a rug big enough for the footrest.

03

“Are reclining sofas good for your back?”

One of the most-searched questions. A small University of Alberta MRI study (22 healthy volunteers) found a reclined position of about 135° put the least strain on spinal discs. A neurosurgeon’s guide calls recliners a good option for back pain “if used in moderation”, and NHS guidance says to get up at least every half hour to an hour. It is comfort, not treatment.

04

“Everything seems to hollow out when you recline.”

People with chronic pain describe losing lower-back support once the seat tips back. NHS seating guidance says a backrest should support the curves of the spine and suggests a small lumbar roll. Test the reclined position in person, not only the upright one.

05

“Will the motor break?”

In forum threads on power recliners, the mechanism and electronics are the most common worry (“the electronics is usually the part that goes out first”), followed by what happens in a power cut. Ask how the mechanism is covered before you buy.

06

“Can a recliner couch go against the wall?”

One of Google’s most-asked follow-ups, because classic recliners need a gap behind them. Serenity and Cascade use a wall-hugging mechanism: no space needed behind it, so every room in this issue keeps the sofa against the wall.

Before the final choice

Test it upright and reclined.

Photographs show colour and proportion; they cannot tell you how a seat feels after an hour. NHS seating guidance warns that seats which are too deep or too low encourage slumping, recommends firmer foam towards the rear, and says to get up regularly. People with chronic pain add one more test: whether the lower back is still supported once the seat tips back. If you have a back condition, ask your doctor or physiotherapist what suits you.

A few useful answers

Living with a recliner, explained.

How do you decorate around a reclining sofa?

Treat it like any good sofa: put it against the longest wall, anchor it with a rug big enough for the raised footrest, use round or light side tables you can move, and put one lamp beside the seat you recline in. Then let colour or texture lead, as in the four rooms above.

Do reclining sofas that don’t look like recliners exist?

Yes. Look for a concealed mechanism, slim or square arms, visible legs or a low plinth, and a contemporary upholstery such as bouclé, velour suede or matte leather. Serenity hides its reclining seats; Cascade keeps a slim, mid-century profile on tapered legs.

Are reclining sofas good for your back?

Many people find it more comfortable to move between upright sitting and a supported, feet-up position over a long evening, and a small MRI study found reclining at about 135° put the least strain on spinal discs. Use it in moderation, get up regularly, and ask your doctor or physiotherapist about your own back. This is general information, not medical advice.

What is a recliner with lumbar support?

It is a recliner whose backrest supports the inward curve of your lower back, either through its shape or with an adjustable section. Check the support both upright and reclined, because some backs lose contact when the seat tips back; a small lumbar cushion works for any sofa.

Can I get a smaller reclining sofa for a small room?

Yes. Serenity and Cascade are made to order, so you choose the number of seats and we can make a smaller size to fit your space. A smaller sofa often costs less: send us your measurements for a quote.

Can a reclining sofa go against the wall?

Only if it has a wall-hugging mechanism. No space needed behind it with Serenity or Cascade: plan the space in front for the raised footrest and for standing up comfortably.

What are the downsides of a reclining sofa?

More moving parts and weight than a standard sofa, a power socket for power models, and a footprint that changes when you recline. Choose a wall-hugging design, measure the reclined length, and check how the mechanism is covered before ordering.

Are the photographs real installations?

No. They are real interior photographs with Couchery sofas edited in as design studies. Use them for styling ideas, and check the model, measurements and a physical upholstery sample before ordering.
